Step 1: Gather pumpkin stems. Using real pumpkins stems adds authenticity to these pumpkins and they are so gorgeous! Find pumpkins at your local pumpkin patch, vegetable stand or grocery store! Stems need to be completely dried, so leave them in a dry, warm place for a week or so.
IMG_5453
Step 3: Thread a long needle with  a heavy thread that matches your velvet.
Make a running stitch 1/4 to 1/2  inch from the edge of the velvet all the way around the circle.
images
Step 4: Gather the thread and pull the pumpkin top together. Leaving enough room to fill.
IMG_5455Step 5: You can fill your pumpkin, with Fiberfill, beans, rice or poly fiber beads. I found using a harder fill (beans and rice) in combination with the softer fiberfill works the best. The poly fiber beads worked well on their own. Try using a kitchen funnel to fill the pumpkin.

Step 6: Once the pumpkin is filled to your liking, sew the opening close, gathering the velvet together and stitching tightly, allowing gathers to form.

IMG_9718aStep 7: Sew opening securely together. Criss crossing thread over opening in fabric.
imagesStep 8: Tie off threads, securely.
images
Step 9: Find the perfect position for the stem on the pumpkin BEFORE you glue it down.
Put a big drop of E-6000 glue in the center of the sewn top of the pumpkin as well as on the stem. Afix stem to the pumpkin. Hold for a minute or 2. Set aside and let completely dry.
Step 10: Enjoy your pretty posh velvet pumpkins! Here are some more examples of some beautiful velvet pumpkins.

Tutorial: cork board

With kids having headed off to college, try making this cork board for your student! It’s easy to hang on the wall, the side or front of the closet, or on the desk. Directions are below.

IMG_1619

I purchased a package of cork boards from Hobby Lobby. Four cork boards come in the package.

IMG_1630

Rather than using thumbtacks, I chose to decorate clothspins and permanently mount them to the cork board.

IMG_1628

Fabric flowers and bright green ribbon are used to embellish cork board.

IMG_1635

Attach the coordinating green piece of ribbon as trim.

IMG_1633

Finished ribbon boarder.

IMG_1653

Attach fabric flowers to the cork board at the point where the ribbon intersects.

IMG_1638

Use large and small size clothespins to make embellished clothespins.

Tutorial: magnet board

IMG_1662

Supplies needed for magnet board. Foam core, fabric, picture frame, sheet of metal.

IMG_1661

First lay out your supplies. Be sure to iron fabric, so finished board will not have wrinkles.

IMG_1682

Cut metal with tin snips to fit frame. Place cut metal sheet on fabric. Cut fabric leaving 3 inches around edges of metal.

IMG_1693

Cut foam core slightly smaller than the piece of metal that you cut to fit the frame. Place fabric, followed by metal sheet into frame. Fold fabric over the piece of metal. Secure magnet board by adding the foam core on top of the fabric and metal. You want it to be a tight fit.

IMG_1691

Completed magnet board! I just love the colors and pattern of this fabric.

IMG_1663

Another completed magnet board. I did not keep either of the magnetic boards for myself, but sent them off to college for my daughter and her roommate. These are so easy to make that I know I will be making one for myself and several as gifts this holiday season.

Tutorial: record bowl & letter holder

This is one of my favorite Do-it Yourself projects. Makes a unique and creative gift. Below are the directions how to make a “record bowl” from an old record. This cute and nostalgic bowl is great for just tossing in your keys, wallet, and phone as you walk in the door. A few years ago as a part of Teacher Appreciate Week, I made all of the teachers at my Son’s middle school a record bowl. The teachers just loved them, using them to store miscellaneous desk items such as scissors, glue, markers, thumb tacks, etc. This year I made a record bowl as well as a wall mounted record mail holder for both my daughter and her college roommate.See instructions below.

IMG_1524

This project starts with gathering up some old records. I purchased records at Half-Priced Books. You can purchase records starting at one dollar and up two five or six dollars. I used records with a center color that I liked or one produced by a favorite artist.

IMG_1532

Remove the records albums from the cardboard folder. You can through out record album cover, unless you have another great project in mind.

IMG_1547

Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

IMG_1543

Next find an appropriately sized kitchen bowl. I used the largest bowl from my set of three kitchen-aide bowls. (Circumference of about ).

IMG_1551

Place record in 200 degree oven. It will take about a minute to heat up enough to be pliable and form into a bowl. See the slight ripple effect on this record? The record is not rippled enough to remove from the oven. Keep eye on record and remove from oven when it has started to melt.

IMG_1541

Using a soft, damp cloth, such as a cloth baby diaper, carefully dust both sides of the record. Make sure the cloth fabric is only a little damp and dust the paper circle in the center of the record very lightly. You do not want to tear the label.

IMG_1545

Next remove rippled record form the oven and quickly form your record bowl by creating pleats or ruffles in the record. Allow record bowl to cool. It is not complete. No two record bowls will be alike!

IMG_1551

Place another record in the 200 degree oven and allow it to get warm.

IMG_1555

Simply use a rolled up kitchen towel to form the record into a mail holder.

IMG_1557

Hang formed record on the wall with a nail placed in the center of the record. I hung one record above the other for great mail storage.
